IPF WEBINAR: ESG AND SUSTAINABILITY IN 2024: IS IT A DECLINING PRIORITY FOR COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE INVESTORS
Date: Tuesday, 26th November
Time: 3.00pm – 4.00pm
Speakers: Andreas Farberg, KLP Sabina Reeves, CBRE Investment Management Jen Stephens, Alliance Global Advisors
This Webinar examines how institutional investors’ focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles—particularly sustainability—has shifted in commercial real estate (CRE) from the post-Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period to 2024. Following the GFC, ESG, especially sustainability, appeared to become central to many CRE investment strategies. Many investors considered that increasing attention to sustainability would reduce operational risks, enhance asset value, and meet growing regulatory and tenant demands for energy efficiency and green buildings. However, there are some signs that over recent years, in the wake of weak CRE performance, the importance of short-term financial returns and risk management has reduced the focus on long-term sustainability goals. The Webinar will discuss trends across regions and sectors and consider if sustainability has become less critical in investment decisions and if it has, whether this is a short-term or long-term trend.
Key Discussion Points:
• ESG’s rise in importance post-GFC
• The Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on sustainability priorities
• Economic and market conditions reshaping investor focus in 2024
• How institutional investors are balancing ESG commitments with financial pressures
• Long-term implications for ESG in CRE investment strategies
